Academic Excellence

Scholarship at Kappa Delta
mlScholarship is one of our chapter’s five excellence areas. This emphasis begins during the New Member period, and remains a priority throughout a member's tenure as a Beta Chi. New members learn the importance of excelling in school, for although we are members of a sorority, we are students of UNC-Chapel Hill first and foremost.  The VP-New Member Education introduces the new women to KD as a place where studying is encouraged in a friendly environment and where girls are inspired—and inspire each other—to achieve good grades.

Within the chapter as a whole, KD has several performance incentives in place to encourage academic excellence and to improve internal PR towards scholarship in our chapter—including “Spotted Scholar of the Week,” “Goodies for Grades,” and the “Skippy Basket”.  In addition, Kappa Delta holds a Scholarship luncheon once a semester, giving women a chance to invite their professors to lunch at the house.  At this luncheon, we honor the girls who made the top 10 GPAs in the previous semester, the women who achieved 4.0s, and the women who had been recently initiated into Gamma Sigma Alpha and Order of Omega Honor Societies.  The scholarship luncheon is a great way for girls to establish good relationships with their professors, and a good chance for professors at UNC to see that KDs make good grades!

*NEW FOR 2010:

Kappa Delta is always evaluating its scholarship program, and as of Winter 2009, we have several plans to kick our scholarship program up a notch. First, we have been collecting information to create a majors and minors data base, a list of the majors, minors, career interests, and past internships of women in our chapter. This information is available online for younger members to access in order to know who to ask for advice in regard to classes or career paths. Also, Kappa Delta hopes to further improve the areas that our members use to study. We plan to hold more “Study Parties” in the kitchen, and provide more academic resources for our members. In addition, the President, Scholarship Chairs, and House Beautification Committee have been working with our house mother to update our basement, and it looks awesome!
